Establishing your TSP Account

The first contribution to TSP is your own or that of the agency or service that will open your account. If you are a FERS or CSRS employee or BRS member who started or joined federal service after October 1, 2020, your agency or service will automatically enroll you in TSP and 5% of your base salary is deducted from your paycheck each pay period and deposited into your TSP2 account, unless you have opted in to stop or change your contributions. If you are a member of the BRS and you stopped contributing during the year, you will automatically be re-enrolled at 5% of your base salary on January 1. If you are FERS or BRS, you also receive contributions from your agency or service. See “Contributions to Agencies/Services for FERS and BRS Participants”. If you are a FERS or CSRS employee or BRS member who commenced or joined federal service between August 1, 2010 and September 30, 2020, you will automatically be enrolled at the 3% rate.

Establishing your TSP account:

If you are a FERS employee hired before August 1, 2010 or an opt-in member of BRS3 and you do not contribute your own funds, you still have a TSP account with automatic contributions ( 1%) from the agency / person on official duty. You must exercise your choice to contribute through your agency or service to begin contributing your own funds to your account and receive the agency/ Service Match Contribution. See “Agent/service fees for FERS and BRS participants”.

If you are not described in any of the preceding paragraphs, you must exercise your TSP contribution selection through your agency or service to set up a TSP account. You do not receive agency/department contributions.
